Description

Bellis daisies are cool-season plants. so they grow and bloom best in mild weather. Start seeds when temperatures are cooler. In temperate areas. sow indoors 6?C8 weeks before the last frost or direct sow in early spring. In hot or tropical climates. sow during your coolest months; if your weather stays warm year-round. grow them in a spot with cooler nights and give afternoon shade.

To sow. use a light. well-draining seed mix. Sprinkle the tiny seeds on the surface and press them gently into the soil. They need light to germinate. so don’t bury them??at most. dust with a very thin layer of mix. Mist lightly or water from the bottom to avoid washing seeds away. Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Germination usually takes about 10?C25 days. and it’s faster in cool. steady temperatures.

Once seedlings appear. give them bright light right away (morning sun or a bright window). Keep moisture steady and thin crowded seedlings so each one has space to grow. When they have 2?C3 true leaves and look sturdy. harden them off for a few days by gradually increasing sun and airflow.

Transplant into fertile. loose. well-drained soil. Space plants about 15?C20 cm apart for a full carpet effect. or wider if you want larger individual clumps. Plant so the crown (where leaves meet roots) sits at soil level. not buried.

For care. give full sun in cool climates. In warm climates. provide morning sun with afternoon shade to prevent heat stress. Water whenever the top layer of soil feels just dry. Bellis likes consistent moisture but hates standing water. so good drainage is important. Feed lightly with a balanced fertilizer every 3?C4 weeks during active growth; too much nitrogen makes lots of leaves but fewer flowers.

Flowers come mainly in cool seasons. Remove faded blooms regularly to encourage more flowering and keep plants tidy. If flowering slows. trim the plant back lightly to trigger fresh growth. Bellis is usually easygoing. but it may stop blooming or decline in prolonged heat??move pots to a cooler spot or increase shade during hot spells.

They grow very well in pots too. Use a container with drainage holes. a fast-draining mix. and water a bit more often than in the ground since pots dry out faster.
